National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2008

image
image

In the U.S AIDS is the leading cause of death among African American women aged 25–34 and fifty percent of new HIV infections in the U.S. occur among people under the age of 25. In response to this trend—and in recognition of the unique role that HIV positive women can play in stopping the spread of HIV—BABES created the HIV/AIDS Outreach and Prevention Education (HOPE) Project in 2006.  As part of the HOPE Project, BABES recently launched a media campaign around National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to encourage all women to recognize their risk of becoming infected and get tested.  This poster is on the inside of metro buses all across King County during the month of March.  It features six local women who are HIV positive and includes Public Health’s HIV/STD hotline.  If you would like to receive a poster to post at your location or schedule an HIV positive speaker to present on Living with HIV/AIDS and/or HIV 101 at your program, contact BABES at 206.720.5566.

Testimonials...

You both look just as normal, loving and caring as both my parents and many others in my life.  Thanks for the big eye opener…

-Brittany, Echo Glen Juvenile Detention Center Student

Thank you for coming and showing us all about HIV/AIDS so that we don’t judge other people that have HIV/AIDS so that we understand them and not to be mean or say something that would hurt them.
- Jorge, Middle School Student

I just want you to know that the girls that you spoke with last week were deeply moved by your stories…Multiple girls said that they had learned a lot…They also said even though they had been learning about HIV for years that it wasn’t until y’all came in that it became real.
- LaRond, Powerful Voices
