Senator Maria Cantwell's Legislative Correspondent Visits BABES

In May 2005, two BABES and I traveled to Arlington, Virginia, for the Voices Conference 2005. On the last day of the conference we went into DC to rally for Title IV and to speak to Congress about the reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act, which provides funding to BABES. Along with two women from Positive Women's Network, which is a Snohomish County-based agency, we went to Senator Maria Cantwell's office to speak with Hanaa Rifaey, the Senator's Legislative Correspondent. We explained to Hanaa how important Title IV funding is to our women, children and families, and how much BABES benefits from Title IV funding. We each shared our personal stories, and Hanaa was very compassionate and intrigued by being able to put faces on the problem of AIDS. While we were there, I asked Hanaa if she or the Senator would be able to come by the BABES office next time they where in Washington State, to meet the staff and see what we do.

In July I got an email from Hanaa saying that she was coming to Washington State and would like to visit BABES. I was very excited, because I think it makes a difference to the "big wigs" when they get to see first-hand what great things Title IV provides and how crucial psychosocial support is to our well-being, in addition to medical care and case-management. On August 11, 2005, the staff met with Ms. Rifaey in the BABES Network-YWCA office. We gave her a tour, told her about the services we provide, and explained that BABES is unique in that we are a peer-led agency (all of our Peer Counselors are HIV positive women). We each told our stories and even cried a little bit, which I know Hanaa was really touched by. She told us that she loves her job, and said that getting to meet her constituents and the real faces behind all the legal jargon is very important to her. She told us that Senator Cantwell is very much for saving Title IV and is working hard to convince her counterparts to reauthorize the Ryan White Care Act.

I want to thank Hanna Rifaey for taking time out of her very busy and hectic schedule to make a special trip to the BABES office to meet the staff and see our organization at work! Thank you, also, to Senator Maria Cantwell for supporting reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act!

Nicole
