THE CHANGING FACES OF AIDS, THEN AND NOW

I thought I knew what I needed to know about HIV/AIDS when the information was really new. Back in the '80s I digested what was coming down the line per the media, television and radio. I understood that it was a white, gay illness that people shared because of their choice of lifestyle. But my personal experience has taught me that this world-wide disease, which has plagued so many, today knows no boundaries.

Early on there were blood problems due to not testing the blood before transfusion. There were also problems with giving birth to children who became victims because we did not know our status. And equally, there were problems due to ignorance of many, including myself, who chose not to pay attention to the changes in who was at risk.

However, the face of AIDS did change. Through many trials and sacrifices of lives, there are many medications to slow down the progression of the disease. From the hemophiliac as a child, Ryan White, to well-known actors, actresses and even the overly populated countries like Africa, there were many who died for the many who live on today.

Today the virus has proven to linger not with the homosexual communities, but the bi-sexual and heterosexual communities. We do have a better handle on blood transfusions, but we continue to be careless with our sharing of needles and drug paraphernalia. We also choose to say people do not need to know my/our business and heighten the risk of our sexual behaviors. When will we learn? The major key is sexual behaviors and, for some, the carelessness/accidents of using needles, drug-related or otherwise.

I personally have a timeline due to my reckless life when my children were young. To date, it has been 27 years for me. What I am getting to is: as long as there are some considerations as to how they live their lives and the support from medications, health care professionals and positive support circles, people will continue living longer.

There is a rising problem of the virus in the African-American communities and lower income homes/people, especially the males. They live double lifestyles of bi-sexualism, or they are not respectful of, or responsible to, acknowledge their status to their partner and use appropriate barriers so not to spread the virus.

The best thing we can do for a better tomorrow is to know our status today. Then, once you know it, respect yourself and your partner(s) by using appropriate barriers to protect each other.
