A "Soulful" Heart
By Kelly

When I think of soul food, I do not think of food in its traditional sense. What feeds my soul does not come in the form of a meal. Soul food to me means something else. To me it is seeing my son smile and hearing his laughter. It is also dancing around our apartment together during our Jackson 5 parties.

Then, there is the joy and comfort I get at the end of the day when I get to wind down and fall asleep with the man I love beside me. To hear Otis Redding sing Try a little tenderness and Prince sing Adore, to feel the sun on my face on a warm summer day, to enjoy the company of my friends, and to lounge around on a lazy Sunday watching hours of Sex and the City - all of these feed my soul.

I love to see genuine joy on people's faces, and my heart and soul are touched beyond belief when I see or hear about people truly being compassionate toward one another. Enjoying a glass of wine as I flip through the latest issue of Vogue, watching the films American Beauty and Garden State, and looking at art created by many of my favorite artists are all things that enlighten my soul. And I love to see people overcome their struggles and the strength that comes from falling down and getting back up again.

There are so many things that feed my soul and make me who I am. They give me character, and I am truly grateful for it all.

"The soul is placed in the body like a rough diamond, and must be polished, or the luster of it will never appear." - Daniel Defoe

- Daniel Defoe
