analysis (BIA). BIA testing helps determine how much of your body is muscle, fat, skeleton, other tissue and water. These components are compared to "norms" just like your total body weight. Depending on your results you can see where you are and if any intervention is necessary. It is important to have your BIA interpreted by someone trained in this type of testing and who understands the body composition changes in HIV+ people. You should be tested periodically so that any changes can be detected and acted on, if needed.

Keeping your body composition as close to normal as possible is a big factor in your success in fighting and surviving HIV infection. If you do get hit with a cold or other infection, it is usually easier to recover each time if you keep yourself as close to your normal weight and body composition as possible. Ask your doctor if body composition testing is available in his/her office. If not, community clinics, pharmacies specializing in HIV care, or HIV related health fairs often have this service. There are also research trials at some major university hospitals that have body composition testing as part of their studies.

Wasting is treatable in most cases. Discuss your options with your doctor and take advantage of body composition testing when it is available to you. Remember, the scale only tells us if you have gained or lost weight, not what your body composition is. This important distinction can help you tremendously in treating your HIV.
