What about my Emotional Well-Being?
by Nancy Wongvipat

We all go through our ups and downs. THe emotional roller coaster can be quite scary for people living with HIV. You may find yourself thinking: "I'm really feeling down," "I feel anxious all the time," "It's hard to deal sometimes," "I on't ahve any support from my family," "I feel so alone," "No one cares." If you can relate to any of these statements it is best not to ignore them. Start by taking some of these steps to take care of your emotional well-being.

  • Everyone is susceptible to depression. However, people living with HIV can be particularly more vulnerable. Ask your medical provider about how he or she can help you.
  • Talk to someone you trust, such as a friend, clegy, or therapist, about what you are feeling. You may want to join a support group to share information, concerns, and solve problems with others dealing with similar issues.
  • Seek spiritual or religious support if it's right for you.
  • Buid a support system. Joining a support group for HIV+ people can be helpful. You can also turn to pets, lovers, friends, famiy, books, newsletters, health care providers, counselors, social workers, or volunteers who help people with HIV.
