Feature: YWCA Domestic Violence and Violence Prevention programs
More than 30% of adults in YWCA employment
programs and 53% of those in emergency shelter and transitional housing
programs report their lives are affected by domestic violence. And during a
recent BABES program evaluation, 25% of BABES surveyed reported having
experienced a domestic violence situation in the past three years. Domestic
violence contributes to unemployment and homelessness, and it is a barrier for
women seeking housing stability and self-sufficiency for themselves and their
children. For women living with HIV, domestic violence further complicates
their efforts to maintain the type of high quality medical care that is
essential to surviving a life-challenging illness.
The motto for the YWCA's Domestic Violence
programs is: Providing Safe Havens from Violence and Abuse, Touching Lives,
Making a real difference. At the East Cherry YWCA, families find shelter and
support services to help them escape violent situations and rebuild their
lives. This branch provides specialized domestic violence outreach services to
African American women throughout King County. YWCA domestic violence advocates
are on-site at Belltown, Rainier, Capitol Hill and Ballard DSHS offices to
provide services to DSHS clients.
In South King County, the YWCA has expanded its
domestic violence services in responses to an unmet need in that region. The
YWCA contracts with the cities of Auburn, Covington, Enumclaw, Federal Way,
Kent, Renton, and Tukwila as well as King County and DSHS to provide advocacy
services to domestic violence victims. YWCA community advocates provide
one-to-one support services to women to help them create a plan for their
safety and direct them to resources for food, clothing, housing and legal
assistance. Support groups are available at no cost at several locations in
South King County.

Más del 30% de
adultos en los programas de empleos del YMCA y 53% de quienes viven en refugios
de emergencia y programas de vivienda transitorios reportan que sus vidas han
sido afectadas por violencia doméstica. Durante un programa de
evaluación reciente de las BABES, 25% de las BABES encuestadas
reportaron haber experimentado alguna situación de violencia
doméstica en los últimos tres años. La violencia
doméstica contribuye al desempleo e indigencia (falta de vivienda), y

escapar de la violencia y reconstruir sus vidas. Esta rama brinda servicios

africano-americanas a través del Condado de King. Las consejeras contra
la violencia doméstica del YWCA están en las oficinas de DSHS de
