What's
Happening at BABES? By Program Manager Sarah Benton
February was a busy month at BABES! We had a free
massage day with our fabulous volunteer massage therapist, Jessica, on Tuesday,
February 13th … followed by a family ice-skating event at Castle Ice in
Renton later that night!
Then on the 21st, we rode the bus to Olympia as
part of Lifelong's AIDS Awareness & Action Day. That day, 300 AIDS
advocates from around the state had 100 appointments with State Senators,
Representatives and Governor Gregoire, too! While there were BABES present from
many state congressional districts, the Seattle BABES contingent met with
Senator Adam Kline, Representative Eric Pedigrew and Representative Sharon
Tomiko-Santos. Among other important AIDS-related issues, we discussed with
them the need to pass the Healthy Youth Act, which ensures all Washington State
students received medically accurate sex education, and to fill the $1 million
budget gap created by the recent federal overhaul of the Ryan White CARE Act
(now called the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act), which
provides funding to AIDS service organizations.
Finally, on Saturday, February 24th we had our
Annual Self-Care Retreat. More than 20 women came to the event, which featured
massages, budget training, laughter therapy, the making of self-care collages,
educational talks and a workshop called "Surviving and Thriving," by our very
own Pat Migliore (who's been living positively for 22 years!), among other
things. At the end of the day, all the women got to take home a special
self-care basket, chock-full of goodies like lotion and nail polish. The kids
who tagged along with their moms also had a great time hanging out with our
Kids' Corner volunteers. They watched movies, played board games and sculpted
fabulous foods out of play-doh!

¿Que pasa en BABES? Por la encargada de programas Sarah

¡Febrero era un mes
ocupado en BABES! ¡Tuvimos un día libre del masaje con nuestra
voluntaria fabulosa de masaje, Jessica, el martes, 13 de febrero … seguido
por un acontecimiento de patina sobre hielo para familias en Castle Ice en
Renton esa noche!
Entonces en el 21, nosotras
cabalgamos el autobús a Olympia como parte del Día de
Conocimiento y Acción sobre SIDA. ¡Ese día, 300 abogados de
SIDA de alrededor del estado tuvo 100 citas con senadores del estado, los
Representantes y el Gobernador Gregoire, también! Mientras había
BABES presentan de muchos estado los distritos congresionales, el contingente
de BABES de Seattle encontró con Senador Adam Kline, Representativo Eric
Pedigrew y Representativo Sharon Tomiko-Santos. Entre otros asuntos importantes
relacionado al SIDA, nosotras discutimos con ellos la necesidad de pasar el
Acto Sano de la Juventud, que asegura a todos estudiantes del Estado de
Washington la educación sexual médicamente exacta recibida, y
para llenar el $1 millón de presupuesto espacio creado por la

Finalmente, el
sábado, 24 de febrero, nosotras tuvimos nuestra Retiro Anual del
Auto-Cuidado. Más de 20 mujeres vinieron al acontecimiento, que
representó los masajes, el presupuesto que entrena, la terapia de la
risa, el hacer de collages de auto-cuidado, discursos educativos y un taller
llamaron "Sobreviviendo y Prosperarando," por nuestra propia Pat Migliore
(quien ha sido viviendo positivamente durante 22 años!), entre otras
cosas. A fines del día, todas las mujeres obtuvieron para tomar en casa
una cesta especial de auto-cuidado, lleno de beatucos como loción y
esmalte para las uñas. Los niños que viniero junto con sus
mamás tuvo también un gran tiempo que cuelga fuera con nuestros
Niños' voluntarios de Rincón. ¡Ellos miraron
películas, jugaron juegos de mesa y hicieron esculpidas fabulosos de
alimentos fuera de Play-doh!

usteded que hicieron los acontecimientos de febrero un éxito, y por
favor nos une en marzo para más diver!
