Amy Benjamin is a National Institutes of Health research fellow and doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado at Denver Program in Health and Behavioral Sciences. She is currently conducting qualitative research on reproductive decision-making among HIV-positive women in Seattle. Before moving to Seattle, Amy was Project Coordinator of HIV Prevention Community Planning for the State of Colorado. In this position she oversaw design, organization, and implementation of Years 1 and 2 of the statewide HIV prevention planning process and creation of a statewide comprehensive plan for HIV prevention. Amy also served as a Buddy and volunteer at the Boulder County AIDS Project from 1993 until she left Colorado in 1999.

Amy has edited books on global public health, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and the global AIDS pandemic by Pulitzer prize-winning author Laurie Garrett and Dr. Jonathan Mann (Betrayal of Trust, 1999; The Coming Plague, 1994; AIDS in the World, 1992). While living in Boston (1985-1993), Amy worked for research projects on racial disparities in infant mortality, health communication, and HIV/AIDS based at the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and Harvard AIDS Institute.

Amy and her 5-year-old son, Noam, have been BABES volunteers since October 2000. Amy has been a member of the Advisory Committee since January 2001, formerly serving as Secretary of the Board of Directors.
imageJulie Sarkissian
Julie Sarkissian is a long time supporter of BABES. In 1998, she became the first employee of Northwest Family Center (NWFC) and later became director. As NWFC developed, Julie was contacted by Kass Anderton, a founding mother of BABES, about the need to establish support and educational services for women living with HIV and AIDS. In 1992, Julie worked with former BABES Executive Director Jesse Chipps to write the grant that provided the first independent funding for The BABES Network. Julie has served on the BABES Board of Directors in the past, and is happy to be able to contribute to the BABES Network-YWCA Advisory Committee.

Julie considers it a privilege to have worked for 31 years in the field of Public Health. She has worked in family planning, urban Indian health, HIV/AIDS prevention and care, and also in parent and child health programs. She has always been interested in programs that empower women to achieve their optimal health and well-being. Julie holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in psychology. Her family includes a husband and son.
